Police are searching for a group of rugby players in relation to a brutal rape in central Wellington.
A 20-year-old woman was attacked around 5am on Sunday in the area of Tory and Holland Streets.
She received injuries described by a doctor as some of the most brutal she has ever seen.
The woman says she walked past a group of men in Courtenay Place, and one of them followed her onto Tory St, where he sexually assaulted her near the back of the Mitre 10 building.
The victim tried to get away but the man followed her down a small alleyway and to the rear of the Wesley Church where she was again sexually assaulted and raped.
Detective senior sergeant Simon Perry says while they did not take part in the assault, a number of the men watched it.
He does not know which rugby club they belong to, but he wants to hear from anyone who saw the group, described as Polynesian in their early 20s.
The alleged attacker was of average height and solid build, with short frizzy hair.

Police are linking a hoax bomb found strapped to a bridge by Nazis and race-hate letters sent to schools.
Traffic ground to a halt last month as bomb disposal experts exploded a suspect package on the A27.
Detectives found a swastika nearby while a pro-Nazi group is believed to be behind the stunt.
Now it is thought the same culprits are responsible for sending hate letters to faith schools in the area.
Police have refused to reveal which schools have been sent the letters on request of the headteachers.
Hampshire police spokesman Neil Miller said: 'I can't say which schools have had letters delivered, but they are all in the Havant area.
'On the content of the letters, at this time all we can say is that the motive of the content is to provoke racial tension or hatred.
'It is a very sensitive issue and police investigations are being thoroughly conducted.
'We will deal with those responsible in a robust manner.'
The A27, near Havant, was brought to a standstill on February 7 after all three lanes were closed in both directions.

A new rumour concerning the NSM is being circulated by a group most of you have never heard of called White Revolution, and its founder Billy Roper. Normally I ignore the constant rumour mill coming from Mr. Roper and his drama queen review, but this time he accussed us of working with a well known Federal Rat named Glen Miller, who testified against the Order. That is where I draw the line, and got dragged into the drama.
His Public post began by telling people not to go to our Rock against Illegal Immigration show, and then telling people the lie that we work with/support Glen Miller, and that Anthony (Formerly of Panzerfaust) was funding the show? I explained to Billy in an e-mail that he had some misinformation, and that he and everyone else knows we have publically condemned Miller on many occasions, even publishing letters from the Order and doing Radio shows about what he did to the Order, and his past collaboration with Morris Dees/SPLC. The NSM has never, ever supported Glen Miller, and never will.
In regards to Ropers lie about Anthony of Panzerfaust setting up or funding our show, that is another blatant ridiculous statement. Anthony is no longer involved in any WP music or show promotions that I am aware of, and he certainly is not funding the NSM or NSM Records. The NSM set up the show on our own, with some help from our friends at Hatecrimes Street Wear.
I stated that since he (Roper) was posting a lie to discredit the NSM that he should re-cant it or I would make a statement. His childish response to me said that my statement would be funny and that no one would believe me because I was a dork.
Yes, I know this all sounds very childish, but the reason I bring it up is because #1. I consider the Order members Martyrs and I would never side with their enemies #2. Working with Snitches gets you stiches in our World! Let that serve as a lesson to those who follow traitors like Glen Miller. #3. When people like Roper take time out of their day to attack and discourage White activists, due to their own failures and petty infighting, it should be exposed so people can move on to better things.

Why we (NSM) do what we do?
Why does the NSM do the things we do?
To all the new people joining the struggle, and those outside of the NSM that are interested in why we do what we do.
These answers will be short and to the point, I could probably write a book on these subjects if I were to elaborate and cover it in detail. For many of you these reasons are obvious, however due to the large influx of new people and the American Public in general being interested in our Party, I will do a run down on some of our reasons.
Question: People often ask us why does the NSM use the swastika, and why do some of the members wear uniforms?
Answer: We use the swastika for many reasons, One: It is an ancient Aryan Symbol (the symbol of the sun), Two: it is universally recognized as THE symbol of White Power, among other reasons. Our Founder Commander George Lincoln Rockwell also stated that the swastika crashes through the media black outs and brings our struggle to the forefront. Proof of his wisdom is obvious in every City we take our message too. We Honor our Martyr and do things the Rockwell way.
Answer: The Uniforms are not a mandatory part of the NSM. They represent specific Divisions/Branches of the overall Political Party (The National Socialist Movement). The Brownshirt Division is the Stormtroops, the White shirts represent the Womens Division, we also have standard Party members that are not attached to specific NSM Divisions, we also have a Skinhead Division, and SS Security.
Question: Is the NSM a Skinhead group?
Answer: Yes, and No. We have Skinheads in every Branch of our Party. Skins rule the streets and when we take the message to the streets they are with us every single time. We have Skinheads in the Stormtroops, SS, Womens Div., Party members, and Skin Div. They have been with us from the start and will always have a place in the Ranks. Skinheads started out as Nationalists and NS, only in more recent years have certain groups turned their backs on NS, such as the Sharps and other anti-racists scum. Skinheads will always be NS, anything less is silly. Now, the no part of this question: The NSM is a Political Party, so therefore would not be called a Skinhead group persay. An 80 year old Grandmother, would not be considered an NSM Skinhead, she would be a Party member. The enemy would like to label us, they call us a Hate group, etc. The truth of the matter is we are a Political Party, and are open to White people from all walks of life. The best path to Victory for our people is what suits us, nothing else matters.
Question: Isn't it dangerous and risky to confront the enemy in the streets, especially when the enemy has overwhelming numbers?
Answer: Yes it is, but life itself is dangerous, you could get hit by a bus walking accross the street. For us (NSM) the time for talking about the problem is long past. We have no need for endless chatter, or squabbling like hens over tactics. The War for our Race has been heaped onto our Doorsteps (thanks to the paid for by israel Puppets in DC), our Nation has changed drastically in the last 10 years alone due to open borders with Mexico (the 3rd World is here now). It will become less risky as our numbers swell, and as more of our fellow Countrymen take to the streets in solidarity. Ask yourself this, if you think its dangerous now, and you shirk away when duty calls over this excuse or that, what future does your little son or daughter have? The difference between the White Racial Warrior and the large segment of America that secretly agree's with us is this. We actively seek to build a future for our next Generation, the sheeple only care about themselves and their temporary safety. A famous American Patriot Ben Franklin once stated that: They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. NSM Marches through Reds in Missouri!!!
NSM Goes Toe to Toe with the Reds in the streets of Missouri!!!

The NSM forces assembled in Missouri today marched and fought directly through a mob of hundreds of screaming and fighting communist agitators. Initial reports from our Comrades was that every single piece of literature they had was handed out to interested locals (approx 150 flyers passed out to people asking to join), and about 8 to 10 locals asked to join in the march as it was in progress. There were a good number of supporters on hand, however the commie agitators were the ones starting the fights, and a number of them went home with some extra knots and perhaps broken bones for attempting to grab at our flags, and signs. Inside the Hitt Street garage, the group organized. As the National Socialist Movement members marched forward they looked to what they saw as local supporters.

COLUMBIA -- In less than 24 hours, about fifty neo-Nazis plan to march through the streets of Columbia. Leaders of the National Socialist Movement say they want to protest Mizzoufs promotion of homosexuality, immigration, degradation and destruction of society. Columbia community and church leaders tell us that members of the white supremacist group want to entice violence from counter protestors and recruit more people for their cause.
Religious leaders plan to march along the same route through Columbia as the neo-Nazis. The prayer procession for peace will take place at seven ofclock on Saturday morning. The neo-Nazis plan to begin their march at noon.
gWefre going to claim that territory as holy ground,h says Rev. Mary Hull, with the St. Paul AME Church. gWefre going to march and pray that there will be peace, that there will be no conflicts and that there will be no outbreaks along that route.h
The neo-Nazi march will take place near the Mizzou campus and downtown Columbia. Downtown business leaders want to conduct business as usual, despite the march.

Security will be tight between noon and five ofclock on Saturday in Columbia. Columbia police is getting help from the Missouri Highway Patrol, the Boone County Sherifffs Department and the MU Police Department.
Columbia police administrators are doing all they can to make the Nazi march a non-event. They told me that their best advice is to just ignore them.
Police administrators say they have more concerns about counter-protestors than the neo-Nazis. gThey want protestors down there because they are able to incite these people into violence against them so they look like the victim,h says CPD Capt. Zim Schwartze. gWefve even been told that if there is not enough from the crowd towards them or enough anger, they sometimes will have their own members go out into the crowd and pretend to be a protestor to incite those around them.h
During a similar march in Toledo, Ohio two years ago, more than 100 counter-protestors were arrested after police lost control of rioters.
Columbia businesses and community groups are planning several free and discounted events to counter the neo-Nazi march.

While most community leaders are asking people to avoid a planned neo-Nazi march tomorrow in downtown Columbia, some high school students say they plan to attend in hopes of witnessing history.
"How many times do the Nazis come marching through your hometown?" Hickman High School senior Tommy Goran asked in Jami Thornsberry’s social studies class yesterday. "Once in a lifetime."
Thornsberry used the National Socialist Movement’s planned event in Columbia to teach her classes about First Amendment rights and to let the students share their impressions of the march.
The neo-Nazi group plans to protest what it believes to be the University of Missouri’s promotion of Marxism, but students said they think that’s just an excuse to come to Columbia and promote their vision of an all-white America.
Thornsberry encouraged the teens to avoid the parade, as requested by Mayor Darwin Hindman and others. "Do not feed the beast," she said. "Do not dine with the devil."
Senior Jaleesa Carter-Jackmon, who is black, plans to follow the advice and stay away from the parade area. "I don’t think of flowers and prettiness when I hear the word ‘Nazi’," she said.
But about half of Thornsberry’s 20 Law in Society students said they plan to go, despite the wishes of their parents, teachers and the police.
"I just want to witness it," senior Myron Thomas said. Myron, who is black, knows the neo-Nazi group will use racist slang, but he said he’s prepared to handle it. "I’ve heard it before. It won’t bother me," he said.
Thornsberry warned students that even if they attend just out of curiosity, they might not be able to control their reactions once they get there.
"Do not validate the Nazis," she said.
A couple of students questioned how people who work downtown are expected to handle the situation. "That’s the blowback," Thornsberry said. The request for people to avoid the area "is terrible for the businesses."
Special Business District Director Carrie Gartner agreed, but she said it’s possible to ignore the neo-Nazis without ignoring downtown merchants. "It’s business as usual," she said. "I don’t know about Marxism, but down here I can assure you that we are all capitalists," she said.
Some of Thornsberry’s students said their Rock Bridge High School counterparts are planning to throw water- and Jell-O-filled balloons at the marchers. Rock Bridge social studies teacher David Egan said he hasn’t heard that rumor. "All the students I have talked to either plan to totally ignore it or attend the event at Douglass Park," he said in an e-mail, referring to a peaceful counterdemonstration planned from noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow.
Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said police are aware of the rumor and warned teenagers that anyone who breaks the law will be arrested, regardless of age. "If a person were to throw a water balloon at somebody, they would most likely be arrested for assault," he said.
Nelson dismissed the notion that police would be there to protect the neo-Nazi marchers, a concern some Kewpies expressed yesterday.
"We’ll be there in an effort to maintain peace and order," Nelson said. "We’ll be there to protect citizens, regardless of which group they’re associated with."
He encourages parents to tell teenagers that their actions won’t change the marchers’ minds. He also said students might think the event is "much bigger than it really is."
"Having a hate group walking downtown, I don’t know if that’s history I’d want to be a part of," Nelson said.

Teens brush off advice on march

While most community leaders are asking people to avoid a planned neo-Nazi march tomorrow in downtown Columbia, some high school students say they plan to attend in hopes of witnessing history.
"How many times do the Nazis come marching through your hometown?" Hickman High School senior Tommy Goran asked in Jami Thornsberry’s social studies class yesterday. "Once in a lifetime."
Thornsberry used the National Socialist Movement’s planned event in Columbia to teach her classes about First Amendment rights and to let the students share their impressions of the march.
The neo-Nazi group plans to protest what it believes to be the University of Missouri’s promotion of Marxism, but students said they think that’s just an excuse to come to Columbia and promote their vision of an all-white America.
Thornsberry encouraged the teens to avoid the parade, as requested by Mayor Darwin Hindman and others. "Do not feed the beast," she said. "Do not dine with the devil."
Senior Jaleesa Carter-Jackmon, who is black, plans to follow the advice and stay away from the parade area. "I don’t think of flowers and prettiness when I hear the word ‘Nazi’," she said.
But about half of Thornsberry’s 20 Law in Society students said they plan to go, despite the wishes of their parents, teachers and the police.
"I just want to witness it," senior Myron Thomas said. Myron, who is black, knows the neo-Nazi group will use racist slang, but he said he’s prepared to handle it. "I’ve heard it before. It won’t bother me," he said.
Thornsberry warned students that even if they attend just out of curiosity, they might not be able to control their reactions once they get there.
"Do not validate the Nazis," she said.
A couple of students questioned how people who work downtown are expected to handle the situation. "That’s the blowback," Thornsberry said. The request for people to avoid the area "is terrible for the businesses."
Special Business District Director Carrie Gartner agreed, but she said it’s possible to ignore the neo-Nazis without ignoring downtown merchants. "It’s business as usual," she said. "I don’t know about Marxism, but down here I can assure you that we are all capitalists," she said.
Some of Thornsberry’s students said their Rock Bridge High School counterparts are planning to throw water- and Jell-O-filled balloons at the marchers. Rock Bridge social studies teacher David Egan said he hasn’t heard that rumor. "All the students I have talked to either plan to totally ignore it or attend the event at Douglass Park," he said in an e-mail, referring to a peaceful counterdemonstration planned from noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow.
Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said police are aware of the rumor and warned teenagers that anyone who breaks the law will be arrested, regardless of age. "If a person were to throw a water balloon at somebody, they would most likely be arrested for assault," he said.
Nelson dismissed the notion that police would be there to protect the neo-Nazi marchers, a concern some Kewpies expressed yesterday.
"We’ll be there in an effort to maintain peace and order," Nelson said. "We’ll be there to protect citizens, regardless of which group they’re associated with."
He encourages parents to tell teenagers that their actions won’t change the marchers’ minds. He also said students might think the event is "much bigger than it really is."
"Having a hate group walking downtown, I don’t know if that’s history I’d want to be a part of," Nelson said.

A planned neo-Nazi march in Columbia is now less than two days away, and ABC 17 has obtained the police training guide detailing plans to keep the public safe. The briefing contains background on the National Socialist Movement, including tactics and examples of where the NSM's message fueled riots.
Approximately 30 NSM members are planning a march Saturday, March 10, around the MU campus. In a detailed briefing, Columbia Police plan to prevent any problems through strong enforcment and a four-prong approach: To ensure public safety, protect life and property, guard the First Amendment rights of all present, and maintain public order. It's an approach police say the NSM will seek to undermine with a strategy to incite minority groups with racial slurs.
ABC 17 spoke with Col. Tim Bishop of the NSM Thursday. Bishop says it is not true that his group incites riots, "We do use certain symbols to shock people into hearing our message of white power, and we will do so in a legal manner." Bishop says he will be at Saturday's march, and says his group will stay within police barricades, "Anyone who commits an illegal act will basically be kicked out of the group."
Police documents show while NSM members often cooperate with police, they will conceal members among counter-protestors to inflame tensions. CPD is working with the Department of Justice to employ tactics to keep such problems at bay.

"Generally speaking what they want to do is get their message out," Overby said.
"We're running a candidate for president in 2008. We're there for white rights," Bishop said.
"Are they seriously thinking they're going to get this person elected, no, of course not," Overby said.
Bishop says he hopes people on both sides of the issue get through the afternoon safely.
"I don't want to see anyone get hurt, I don't want to see anyone in the opposition get hurt," Bishop said.
But MU sociologist John Galliher says a clash works in Nazi's favor.
"That's exactly what they have in mind. So they can become the victims and so they can say 'ya see what we're up against here," Galliher said.
But both sides agree on any group's right to speak.
"The 1st amendment's there to protect unpopular speech," Overby said.

Aryan agenda includes creating white nation

The National Socialist Movement, scheduled to march Saturday in Columbia, is a neo-Nazi group seeking to create an all-white America.
The group’s Web site says the organization is "dedicated to the preservation of our proud Aryan heritage and the creation of a National Socialist society in America and around the world."
The group also works with other white supremacy groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Skinheads and Racial Nationalist Party of America.
Jeff Schoeb, commander of the Minneapolis-based group, said the organization is a "white people political party." The group plans on sponsoring 2008 presidential candidate John Taylor Bowles, who plans to attend this weekend’s event, according to a news release sent by the group.
Schoeb, who said he would not attend the march, said the march is intended to recruit new members and act as a political campaign. The parade permit says the group wants "to protest the promotion of Marxism by the University of Missouri."
The permit allows the group to march between noon and 5 p.m. Saturday near the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.
Columbia police have discouraged the public from attending the demonstration, and community leaders have organized alternative events.
In a news conference yesterday, MU Chancellor Brady Deaton said he would like people to use Saturday afternoon as a time to reflect on positive ideas and activities. That should be "the first step" for better dialogues about diversity, he said.
Schoeb said his group, which traces its origin to the American Nazi Party, believes in nationalism first and that all non-Aryans should be evicted from the country.
"America was a white country and these other people don’t belong here," Schoeb said. "When you force cultures together, it’s very difficult for them to get along."
The group’s other goals include affordable and accessible health care, higher education for poor students paid by the state, the nationalization of all corporations, and ensuring that all citizens of the all-white nation have equal rights and duties.
The Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, counted 82 National Socialism chapters in the country last year, including one in Columbia.
Mark Potok, director of the center’s intelligence project, said internal feuds and bickering have caused some members of the neo-Nazi group to leave during the past year. Potok predicted group members in Columbia would wear Nazi uniforms and shout racial slurs.
"What you’re likely to see is a dozen Nazis, surrounded by a hundred police officers, surrounded by 500 counterdemonstrators," he said. "The danger of these counterdemonstrations is the counterdemonstrators can’t get to the Nazis."
MU assistant geography Professor Larry Brown, who teaches a class about white nationalism, said the group wants to "create a scenario where they can justify their white supremacy."
"What they have been doing in recent years, they have a march and broadcast their propaganda verbally and try to get a violent reaction from the community," Brown said.
He also said the public should avoid downtown on Saturday. "Unfortunately, they are great verbal manipulators," he said. "Whether you think you can just listen, next thing you know you’re angry."

Nobody knows what will happen at the rally because it depends on how the crowd reacts to their protests. But whatever happens the Columbia Police Department wants to make sure its ready.
The parade route the nazi group will take is mainly on the MU campus centered around the school of journalism. It misses most of the businesses in the district, but others aren't so lucky. Mike Geiss, co-owner of the Campus Bar & Grill says they will take precautions more to prevent anything from happening, but other than that he’s not too concerned about it.
The neo-nazi group may have the right to freedom of speech, but police say they'll have them on a tight leash. Captain Zim Schwartze with the Columbia Police Department says they must stay on the sidewalk and side of the roadway. She says they cannot block traffic or individuals walking and must keep moving.
Police are hoping for no problems, but just in case, they're beefing up their manpower with help from five different agencies. They’re also busting out the heavy equipment.

The local police may not be used to dealing with a hate group like the nazi's but they have had some help. Schwartze says they researched other stops the group has made and it was very helpful to here from other agencies about what works well and what doesn’t work. Schwartze says it was a great way for them to prepare.
The march will on Saturday from noon to five.

Nov. 11, Austin, Texas: About 20 members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol building. The Austin American-Statesman reported there were about 250 counterdemonstrators and no arrests.
Aug. 28, Madison, Wis.: Sixty-four members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol building. The Daily Cardinal reported that about 300 police officers and 800 counterdemonstrators turned out, resulting in one scuffle and five arrests.
July 3, Olympia, Wash.: Thirteen members of the National Socialist Movement gathered. The Olympian reported that about 200 police officers and about 500 counter demonstrators turned out, resulting in no arrests. Community members organized a diversity fair, fundraising and documentary screenings; counter demonstrators drowned out the neo-Nazis by banging pots and pans, according to the Olympian.
Feb. 25, Orlando, Fla.: Twenty-two members of the National Socialist Movement marched through a predominantly black neighborhood before holding a rally at City Hall. The Orlando Sentinel reported that about 300 police officers and more than 500 counterdemonstrators responded, resulting in 17 arrests. Some residents attend a memorial to Coretta Scott King and a prayer rally.
Oct. 15, 2005, Toledo, Ohio: About 12 members of the National Socialist Movement marched. The Associated Press reported that counterdemonstrators threw rocks, bricks and other debris at the neo-Nazis, starting a 600-person riot, in which a bar was burned down and several buildings were looted. The mayor declared a state of emergency and an 8 p.m. curfew for the two days following the riot. Twelve police officers were injured and 114 people were arrested.
July 17, 2004, Lincoln, Neb.: Fifty members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol, drawing 225 police officers and about 300 protestors, which resulted in two arrests, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. A diversity rally four miles away drew more than 1,000 people.

When Steven Morrison, executive director of the Jewish Community Council in Madison, Wis., learned that members of the National Socialist Movement planned a rally on the steps of the Wisconsin state Capitol on a Saturday afternoon, he didn’t hesitate to announce what he planned to do during the event — take a nap.
“It’s a hundreds-of-years-old Jewish custom to take a nap every Saturday afternoon — Saturday is the Jewish sabbath,” Morrison said. “So what I announced was that I thought everybody should follow Jewish custom and take a nap on Saturday afternoon.”
Morrison and his group joined several other Madison groups in telling city residents to stay home and ignore the neo-Nazis when they came to his city in August, emphasizing that just because the group had a right to speak didn’t mean the community had to listen.
“The goal was to let the Nazis know that we believe in doing positive things here,” Morrison said. “We encouraged people to make a contribution to (groups supporting the rights of minorities and immigrants) because that’s the kind of thing they would really hate.”
Peter Munoz, executive director of the Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, joined Morrison in encouraging residents to show disapproval by staying away.
“We knew that here in Madison (the neo-Nazis) would look very pathetic,” Munoz said. “For us, the most ideal situation was that they would show their pathetic selves in their small demonstration and that they would go away as soon as possible.”
Not everyone agreed with the stance taken by Morrison and Munoz.
Chris Dols organized a group called No Nazis in Madison and helped turn out more than 800 counterdemonstrators at the Capitol, according to The Associated Press.
Dols said he wanted to confront the 64 neo-Nazis because he was troubled by how mainstream he thought sentiments of anti-immigration and discrimination had become.
“It’s a big mistake to say that there aren’t people out there who are interested in joining the Nazis,” Dols said. “We argued that Nazis can’t just be ignored. People used that argument in Germany in the early 1930s: These folks are lunatics, they’re fringe, they’re marginal. But the thing about the society we live in is that there aren’t very good explanations for why there is misery, for why there’s war, for why there’s unemployment. A lot of people are looking for explanations, and, unfortunately, the Nazis have an explanation. It’s not a very good one, but they have an explanation nonetheless.”
Despite the counterdemonstration, the Madison rally came and went with five arrests and no violence, leading Madison police to consider the day a success, according to The Associated Press.
Munoz and Morrison said their experience dealing with hate groups taught them that no response was the best response.
“I’ve been doing this for almost 40 years,” Morrison said. “I’ve found over the years that this kind of approach of quarantine ... is a very effective strategy.”
Because Madison had peacefully responded to hate groups in the past, Morrison and Munoz said they didn’t feel it necessary to schedule alternative events during the neo-Nazi rally. Morrison said that doesn’t mean other communities shouldn’t do so.
“There’s a difference, I think, between Columbia and Madison,” Morrison said. “Unless you have this tradition in the community where lots of crazy kinds of people show up, there’s maybe less of a developed tradition of how to respond.”
Such alternative events can be effective in drawing crowds. In July 2004, residents of Lincoln, Neb., attended a No Place for Hate rally in a park, while members of the National Socialist Movement gathered on the steps of the state Capitol building several miles away.
“We wanted them to have a party and have nobody show,” said Susan Scott, executive director of the Young Women’s Christian Association in Lincoln.
Scott said the event included speakers and entertainment and drew in about 1,400 people, compared to the 350 counterdemonstrators at the Capitol.
Munoz said he thought scheduling alternative activities during Saturday’s anticipated neo-Nazi march is a good idea for Columbia.
Alternative activities are “excellent options,” Munoz said. “If you feel compelled to do something, that’s exactly what should happen — alternative events to draw people. It will be the young ones who will be inclined to, if there aren’t other options, go and counterdemonstrate. Counterdemonstrations are totally counterproductive.”

COLUMBIA- Mid-Missourians are outraged at Saturday's planned National Socialist Movement march and are planning many opportunities to counter the negativity.
Mayor Darwin Hindman says although the group is legally allowed to march, he wants to fight fire with fire.
"They're going to express themselves, as disgusting as their message maybe," Hindman said. "But it's those of us who I think are thedecent people, the people who really believe in America in the way it isand should be that need to get together and express themselves ina peaceful way as well."
The march is scheduled to go through downtown Columbia Saturday. Many organizations plan to have counter-protests in other parts of town. One website is even collecting donations which will go to groups that the NSM members hope to shake-up.
Community leaders from across Columbia and beyond are urging residents to ignore the march. Ignoring the march may be difficult to some in such a compassionate area but the wait is becoming easier as more groups plan positive community events.

Nobody knows what will happen at the rally because it depends on how the crowd reacts to their protests. But whatever happens the Columbia Police Department wants to make sure its ready.
The parade route the nazi group will take is mainly on the MU campus centered around the school of journalism. It misses most of the businesses in the district, but others aren't so lucky. Mike Geiss, co-owner of the Campus Bar & Grill says they will take precautions more to prevent anything from happening, but other than that he’s not too concerned about it.
The neo-nazi group may have the right to freedom of speech, but police say they'll have them on a tight leash. Captain Zim Schwartze with the Columbia Police Department says they must stay on the sidewalk and side of the roadway. She says they cannot block traffic or individuals walking and must keep moving.
Police are hoping for no problems, but just in case, they're beefing up their manpower with help from five different agencies. They’re also busting out the heavy equipment.

The local police may not be used to dealing with a hate group like the nazi's but they have had some help. Schwartze says they researched other stops the group has made and it was very helpful to here from other agencies about what works well and what doesn’t work. Schwartze says it was a great way for them to prepare.
The march will on Saturday from noon to five.

Nov. 11, Austin, Texas: About 20 members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol building. The Austin American-Statesman reported there were about 250 counterdemonstrators and no arrests.
Aug. 28, Madison, Wis.: Sixty-four members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol building. The Daily Cardinal reported that about 300 police officers and 800 counterdemonstrators turned out, resulting in one scuffle and five arrests.
July 3, Olympia, Wash.: Thirteen members of the National Socialist Movement gathered. The Olympian reported that about 200 police officers and about 500 counter demonstrators turned out, resulting in no arrests. Community members organized a diversity fair, fundraising and documentary screenings; counter demonstrators drowned out the neo-Nazis by banging pots and pans, according to the Olympian.
Feb. 25, Orlando, Fla.: Twenty-two members of the National Socialist Movement marched through a predominantly black neighborhood before holding a rally at City Hall. The Orlando Sentinel reported that about 300 police officers and more than 500 counterdemonstrators responded, resulting in 17 arrests. Some residents attend a memorial to Coretta Scott King and a prayer rally.
Oct. 15, 2005, Toledo, Ohio: About 12 members of the National Socialist Movement marched. The Associated Press reported that counterdemonstrators threw rocks, bricks and other debris at the neo-Nazis, starting a 600-person riot, in which a bar was burned down and several buildings were looted. The mayor declared a state of emergency and an 8 p.m. curfew for the two days following the riot. Twelve police officers were injured and 114 people were arrested.
July 17, 2004, Lincoln, Neb.: Fifty members of the National Socialist Movement gathered at the state Capitol, drawing 225 police officers and about 300 protestors, which resulted in two arrests, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. A diversity rally four miles away drew more than 1,000 people.

When Steven Morrison, executive director of the Jewish Community Council in Madison, Wis., learned that members of the National Socialist Movement planned a rally on the steps of the Wisconsin state Capitol on a Saturday afternoon, he didn’t hesitate to announce what he planned to do during the event — take a nap.
“It’s a hundreds-of-years-old Jewish custom to take a nap every Saturday afternoon — Saturday is the Jewish sabbath,” Morrison said. “So what I announced was that I thought everybody should follow Jewish custom and take a nap on Saturday afternoon.”
Morrison and his group joined several other Madison groups in telling city residents to stay home and ignore the neo-Nazis when they came to his city in August, emphasizing that just because the group had a right to speak didn’t mean the community had to listen.
“The goal was to let the Nazis know that we believe in doing positive things here,” Morrison said. “We encouraged people to make a contribution to (groups supporting the rights of minorities and immigrants) because that’s the kind of thing they would really hate.”
Peter Munoz, executive director of the Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, joined Morrison in encouraging residents to show disapproval by staying away.
“We knew that here in Madison (the neo-Nazis) would look very pathetic,” Munoz said. “For us, the most ideal situation was that they would show their pathetic selves in their small demonstration and that they would go away as soon as possible.”
Not everyone agreed with the stance taken by Morrison and Munoz.
Chris Dols organized a group called No Nazis in Madison and helped turn out more than 800 counterdemonstrators at the Capitol, according to The Associated Press.
Dols said he wanted to confront the 64 neo-Nazis because he was troubled by how mainstream he thought sentiments of anti-immigration and discrimination had become.
“It’s a big mistake to say that there aren’t people out there who are interested in joining the Nazis,” Dols said. “We argued that Nazis can’t just be ignored. People used that argument in Germany in the early 1930s: These folks are lunatics, they’re fringe, they’re marginal. But the thing about the society we live in is that there aren’t very good explanations for why there is misery, for why there’s war, for why there’s unemployment. A lot of people are looking for explanations, and, unfortunately, the Nazis have an explanation. It’s not a very good one, but they have an explanation nonetheless.”
Despite the counterdemonstration, the Madison rally came and went with five arrests and no violence, leading Madison police to consider the day a success, according to The Associated Press.
Munoz and Morrison said their experience dealing with hate groups taught them that no response was the best response.
“I’ve been doing this for almost 40 years,” Morrison said. “I’ve found over the years that this kind of approach of quarantine ... is a very effective strategy.”
Because Madison had peacefully responded to hate groups in the past, Morrison and Munoz said they didn’t feel it necessary to schedule alternative events during the neo-Nazi rally. Morrison said that doesn’t mean other communities shouldn’t do so.
“There’s a difference, I think, between Columbia and Madison,” Morrison said. “Unless you have this tradition in the community where lots of crazy kinds of people show up, there’s maybe less of a developed tradition of how to respond.”
Such alternative events can be effective in drawing crowds. In July 2004, residents of Lincoln, Neb., attended a No Place for Hate rally in a park, while members of the National Socialist Movement gathered on the steps of the state Capitol building several miles away.
“We wanted them to have a party and have nobody show,” said Susan Scott, executive director of the Young Women’s Christian Association in Lincoln.
Scott said the event included speakers and entertainment and drew in about 1,400 people, compared to the 350 counterdemonstrators at the Capitol.
Munoz said he thought scheduling alternative activities during Saturday’s anticipated neo-Nazi march is a good idea for Columbia.
Alternative activities are “excellent options,” Munoz said. “If you feel compelled to do something, that’s exactly what should happen — alternative events to draw people. It will be the young ones who will be inclined to, if there aren’t other options, go and counterdemonstrate. Counterdemonstrations are totally counterproductive.”

COLUMBIA- Mid-Missourians are outraged at Saturday's planned National Socialist Movement march and are planning many opportunities to counter the negativity.
Mayor Darwin Hindman says although the group is legally allowed to march, he wants to fight fire with fire.
"They're going to express themselves, as disgusting as their message maybe," Hindman said. "But it's those of us who I think are thedecent people, the people who really believe in America in the way it isand should be that need to get together and express themselves ina peaceful way as well."
The march is scheduled to go through downtown Columbia Saturday. Many organizations plan to have counter-protests in other parts of town. One website is even collecting donations which will go to groups that the NSM members hope to shake-up.
Community leaders from across Columbia and beyond are urging residents to ignore the march. Ignoring the march may be difficult to some in such a compassionate area but the wait is becoming easier as more groups plan positive community events.

FBI Won't Monitor Columbia for Nazi March
KANSAS CITY - Saturday's Nazi march isn't the first time police have encountered hate groups in Missouri.
KOMU talked with the FBI to discuss what their involvement will be in this weekend's demonstration.
The FBI does not plan on sending agents to monitor Saturday's parade by the National Socialist Movement.
In fact, the FBI is not even very involved in preventing hate crimes, which are attacks motivated by bias.
Instead, they react and prosecute violations of civil rights.
The closest division headquarters for the FBI is in Kansas City.
Agents will stay home this weekend despite concerns about the possibility of violence surrounding the neo-Nazi parade.
"Just conducting a parade that may be designed to intimidate people in general probably would not cross the line into criminal activity," FBI agent Jeff Lanza said.
Lanza admits the FBI keeps a list of groups that espouse hate, but he said it cannot track these groups based on their ideologies.
"The FBI does not track or monitor any groups, we investigate criminal activity," Lanza explained.
Though the National Socialist Movement clearly supports bias against ethnic groups, the FBI said simply sharing those opinions is not a problem.
"The line gets crossed when the intimidation is done to affect the victim's rights," Lanza said. "Their right to practice their religion, to live where they want, to go where they want to go to school. The freedoms we enjoy as American citizens."
The Patriot Act makes it easier for the FBI to communicate with other agencies to keep an eye on hate criminals and possible terrorists, but the first amendment still protects free speech and demonstration.
"I think I would rather have those freedoms than to have those types of things forbidden and live in a country like that," Lanza said.
The FBI will be involved if hate crimes do result from Saturday's march.

COLUMBIA - Columbia is calling for a calm Saturday when members of an American Nazi party plan to march through downtown.
City leaders laid out their plan on Wednesday afternoon. "Not in our Town" was one of the slogans at Wednesday's meeting.
Columbia residents made their feelings clear by wearing buttons displaying the slogan.
Mayor Darwin Hindman said he wants Columbia residents to take a more measured approach when dealing with the march.
The city researched similar protests in other cities and found the best response is for Columbia residents to avoid the situation.
The city is encouraging adults to help Columbia youth find a positive message through attending alternative events.
"We celebrate diversity in this community. And although we truly recognize and respect the right to free speech, we are not making these people feel welcome," Mayor Hindman said.
Mayor Hindman also wants to make it clear that it should be "business as usual" in the downtown area, but asked that Columbia residents not make a trip just to see the parade.
The parade permit allows the march to occur sometime between noon and five on Saturday.

Businesses Won't Welcome Nazis
COLUMBIA - Three days and counting, and Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman said he has no intention of welcoming the Nazis with open arms Saturday.
Mayor Hindman is on the same page with at least one local business owner.
"I think you treat it like the annoying kid in the 4th grade class, you just ignore it, don't give the cry-baby his candy," Jason Robertson, owner of Campus Bar and Grill, said.
Over at city hall, the mood was very similar
"Don't even give them a glass of water," City Council member Almeta Crayton said. "Let them go where they need to go and we're going to stay here and do what we need to do with our community."
Community groups have organized alternative activities to keep citizens, especially younger citizens, away from Saturday's Nazi march.
The events include a gathering at Douglass Park called "Spark in the Park."
Local movie theaters and skating rinks are offering half price youth admission, but some local businesses will have trouble avoiding the protesters.
The intersection of 9th Street and Elm will be closed to traffic on Saturday to make way for the National Socialist Movement march which goes up Elm then loops back around and down 9th Street.
This gives the deck on top of Campus Bar and Grill a birds eye view of a lot of the march. Managers said the deck will remain open but security will be increased.
Despite these worries, Hindman is calling for business as usual.
"If you have business downtown go about your business downtown," Hindman said. "What we don't want is people idly going downtown to confront the parade."
With the plan in place, the city and business owners can only wait until Saturday.

Using that sort of backwards logic is sort of like saying a pretty girl incites rape, or seeing a negro walking down the street incites lynchings. Columbia police say it will be easy to tell whether the neo-Nazi group scheduled to march this weekend gets what it wants.
Members of the National Socialist Movement want to incite spectators, causing police to arrest dozens of Columbia residents and make it appear the police are on the same side as the neo-Nazis, police Capt. Tom Dresner said.
That was the case in Toledo, Ohio, in October 2005, where a four-hour riot led to 120 arrests, Capt. Brad Nelson said during a community meeting yesterday at police headquarters. Police urged residents to avoid the demonstration this weekend.
Police Chief Randy Boehm was not at the meeting because he is out of town, Dresner said.
The Minneapolis- based, neo-Nazi group was granted a permit to march downtown between noon and 5 p.m. Saturday.
Police have spent the past week preparing the required security and brushing up on protocol for controversial marches.
"No city ever wants to deal with this element of our society," Dresner said, "but unfortunately, we got picked."
Dresner, assigned by Boehm as acting chief, said officers will make sure the group sticks to its approved parade route.
Nelson, assigned by Boehm as incident commander, said police would not block off those streets. Marchers have to be continuously moving, stay to the right of the road or on the sidewalk and cannot impede traffic.
"That route you could probably walk in 20 minutes," Nelson said. "Why they applied for a five-hour permit, I don’t know."
Nelson said most of the officers assigned to the event would be working overtime. Tactical teams with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Jefferson City Police Department will be standing by as well.
"The crowd, if any, will dictate our response," Nelson said.
University of Missouri-Columbia Police Chief Jack Watring said his department would have a presence downtown but also has to work around Mizzou Arena because of a scheduled state basketball tournament.

Police from Columbia and other jurisdictions have developed a plan to maintain order during this weekend’s planned neo-Nazi march, while community leaders are formulating a civic response, including declaring a day of tolerance.
At a community meeting at the Columbia Police Department headquarters Monday, Columbia police Capt. Tom Dresner urged members of the public to ignore Saturday’s march. The purpose of the National Socialist Movement’s event, he said, is to incite violence from counterprotesters and draw attention to their efforts to recruit new members.
A “significant” police presence will be involved in keeping peace at the event, including motor and mounted officers from the Columbia police, crisis negotiation team members and SWAT team officers, Dresner said.
Other law enforcement agencies who will be present include the Boone County Emergency Response Team, the MU Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The FBI will also notify Columbia police if any of the neo-Nazi group members are wanted for crimes, Dresner said.
The march, according to the group’s permit, will start Saturday at Seventh and Elm Streets and cover an area bounded by Hitt Street, University Avenue and Ninth Street at any time from noon to 5 p.m.
Steven Boswell, the leader of the Missouri chapter and a sergeant in the organization, said the group will protest what it says is MU’s promotion of “homosexuality, immigration, degradation and destruction of society.” About 20 to 50 people will participate in the march, according to the permit.
Mark Potok, spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, said the demonstrators probably will march in uniform and yell racial slurs. Neo-Nazi groups do not usually carry weapons during demonstrations and will instead leave their weapons in their cars before marching, Potok said.
Police said the demonstrators must keep moving and not stop to confront counterdemonstrator s.
“Yes, counterdemonstrate. Just don’t do it where (the neo-Nazis) are,” Potok said. “You have to do something. If you do nothing, these groups take it as a sign of local support and may come back.”
In 2005, the organization marched in Toledo, Ohio, when police lost control of the city to rioters for four hours. Counterprotesters threw bricks at police and set a building on fire. Over 100 counterprotesters were arrested and none of the neo-Nazis were arrested, Dresner said.
Police encouraged residents in Columbia to follow how citizens
of Orlando, Fla., reacted to a similar demonstration in 2006, when residents organized peaceful alternative events away from the march and only 17 people were arrested.
Dresner declined to reveal the number of officers who will monitor the march because he said those details will only help the neo-Nazi group.
“They say they want to protest the promotion of Marxism at MU. We all know better. They want to cause a confrontation that in their best-case scenario causes us to be at odds with the minority communities especially,” Dresner said.
Community leaders packed a conference room at the Police Department on Monday afternoon to discuss options for how to keep community members safe, specifically teenagers who might want to confront the neo-Nazi group.
Mary Ratliff, president of the Missouri chapter of the NAACP, suggested a rally on the steps of the Boone County Courthouse to begin at the same time as the march.
“While you are out there marching and being ignorant, we are going to stand together and say you’re not welcome here,” Ratliff said. “We have to confront those people. You have to be willing to give up your safety for freedom. I am aghast at hiding while the neo-Nazis march. What I am asking for is for us to be visible.”
Mayor Darwin Hindman said he would declare Saturday a Tolerance Day, while organizations planned ways to counteract the effect of the march.
Roger Worthington, chief diversity officer at MU, said the Jewish Student Organization has set up a Web site at tolerance.homestead .com where residents can pledge money for charities for every minute the march lasts.
ParentLink, a Columbia-based parenting service group, is making a flyer in Spanish and English to distribute to parents with information on how to teach their children to deal with hate.
Other proposed events include a gathering with food and music at Douglass Park at the same time as the march.
Over 500 students at MU joined a group on facebook.com to protest the march peacefully, but changed the purpose of the group and called for no protest.
“The community should not engage,” said Karen Aroesty, the regional director for Missouri and Southern Illinois of the Anti-Defamation League. “The last thing you want is someone who thinks they can get into a conversation with a white separatist and think they’ll change someone’s mind.”

About 50 Columbia residents gathered Sunday night to discuss what the community should do in response to a planned visit by the National Socialist Movement, a neo-Nazi group, on March 10.
First among the group’s goals was to keep young people, who group members think are most vulnerable to a heated reaction, out of trouble.
“Me and you know not to go over there, but what about the young people?” said First Ward Councilwoman Almeta Crayton. “I was more worried about our young people who don’t know the ugliness of what’s about to go on. I want to know what you’re going to do about my children.”
The discussion took place at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in response to reports that the National Socialist Movement will march in Columbia.
According to Steven Boswell, an organizer of the planned National Socialist Movement march, the group will protest what it says is MU’s promotion of “homosexuality, immigration, degradation and destruction of society” among students.
At Sunday’s meeting, Columbia residents brainstormed ways to respond to the parade. Residents were also concerned about not dignifying the neo-Nazis’ protest with attention they believe the group craves.
Suggestions included the following:
Having a news conference with community leaders and university representatives to draw more attention to their cause.
Offering an alternative celebration during the parade at a place like Douglass Park and Pool or the MLK Memorial Site.
Holding a counter-demonstrati on the day after the parade.
Asking movie theaters to offer free movies at the same time as the parade.
Holding a prayer vigil at the same time.
Organizing a fundraiser in which residents could pledge a certain amount of money to youth organizations and organizations that promote tolerance for every minute that the National Socialist Movement is in Columbia.
Asking schools, colleges and the university to notify their students of the parade and ask them not to attend.
Holding a basketball tournament at the same time as the parade.
“The key will be to make sure there is a campaign of making people aware of what they (the National Socialist Movement) are trying to do,” said Roger Worthington, MU chief diversity officer.
Another meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church to discuss the group’s progress.
Crayton, Wynna Faye Elbert, a member of the Frederick Douglass Coalition, and Worthington will meet with the Columbia Police Department at 2 p.m. today to discuss the parade. Everyone is encouraged to join them for support, Elbert said.
Crayton invited people to help support the group’s appeal to police.
“I am not afraid of anything, but I am not foolish enough to think that I can stand up to all this ugliness by myself,” she said.
It was also suggested that a town hall meeting should be held with police this week. For now the residents have a simple message for the group: “This is our community,” said Crayton. “We’re staying here. You can come and go, but we will not tolerate that ugliness.”

The National Socialist Movement, based in Minneapolis, will have a parade in Columbia on Saturday to protest the promotion of Marxism by the MU School of Journalism, the Cambio Center and the university in general, said Steven Boswell, leader of the Missouri chapter.
“Every single journalist that comes out of the university had been extremely left wing and Marxist,” Boswell said. “The primary goal of Marxism is to destroy national boundaries through promoting homosexuality, immigration, degradation and destruction of society.”
Boswell said that the university actively promotes Marxism though its teaching, classes and policies.
Boswell said that the university is “trying to weed out the white Missourian,” and make Missouri a “brown state.”
The National Socialist Movement, according to its Web site, calls itself “America’s Nazi Party” and says it is “the fastest growing neo-Nazi organization in the United States.”
Col. Tim Bishop, one of the organization’ s top leaders, said that the National Socialist Movement is pro-white. He said that the organization gets 15 to 20 new members a day nationwide.
Boswell said that he does not know how many people will be attending the parade, and he would not disclose the parade’s location and time.

A national Nazi group is planning a five-hour march in downtown Columbia next weekend to "protest the promotion of Marxism by the University of Missouri," according to the group’s parade permit.
The National Socialist Movement, based in Minneapolis, claims to be America’s largest and fastest-growing Nazi group. Missouri Unit Leader Steven Boswell said he organized the March 10 event because the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, the campus’ immigration research center and university system President Elson Floyd are "are promoting the destruction of the United States."
"The University of Missouri has the No. 1 journalism school in the country," Boswell said. "They produce Marxist reporter after Marxist reporter after Marxist reporter. They never have a Nationalist come out of there or anybody that is willing to speak the truth."
Boswell said MU’s immigration research center, the Cambio Center, and the journalism school’s bilingual newspaper, Adelante!, are promoting Mexican immigration, which the group considers an ongoing invasion of the United States by Mexico.
"I’ve never met the outgoing president personally," Boswell said of Floyd, "but from what I understand, he’s a Marxist."
University of Missouri spokesman Scott Charton bristled at Boswell’s statements. "I will not dignify such vile, repugnant, ignorant statements with a comment," he said.
Columbia Police Department approved the group’s permit application on Feb. 20. "As much as we abhor such groups," Police Capt. Brad Nelson said, "the First Amendment guarantees their right to espouse their beliefs."
National Socialist Movement members in October 2005 sparked a four-hour riot in Toledo, Ohio, during a march they said was intended to protest gangs and rising crime. Businesses were burned and bricks were thrown at police.
Nelson said Columbia residents should ignore the Nazi group next weekend because its goal is to incite violence from counterprotesters. "My primary concern is they will succeed, and the counterprotesters or audience members will commit acts of violence, which will unfortunately result in the police having to take action," he said.
The march will take place between noon and 5 p.m. and the permit estimates participation by 20 to 50 people. Boswell said in an interview, however, he isn’t sure how many members of his group will attend.
The group, which shares beliefs with groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Skinheads, advocates among other things requiring all non-white U.S. citizens to leave the country, by force if necessary.

"Our African-American young men and women are in Iraq giving their lives for this country," she said. "When we have these racists groups parading around, actually protesting our very existence, it’s very disturbing."
The march route will include Elm Street between Seventh and Hitt streets; Hitt Street between Elm and University Avenue; University Avenue between Hitt and Ninth streets; and Ninth between University and Elm, according to the parade permit application.

The New York City measure follows similar resolutions this month by the New York state assembly and state senate, and supporters of the ban are taking their campaign to The Recording Academy, asking it not to nominate musicians for Grammy awards if they use the word in their lyrics.
Many rap artists and young New Yorkers toss the word around as a term of endearment or as a substitute for black, angering some black leaders who consider those who use it as ignorant of the word's hate-filled history in slavery and segregation.
"This could be the beginning of a movement," councilman Albert Vann said.
Councilman Leroy Comrie, a sponsor of the moratorium, said the campaign against the word has gained strength since comedian Michael Richards spewed it in a racially charged tirade in Los Angeles.
The Laugh Factory club where Richards performed has since banned comedians from using the word there and the former "Seinfeld" television star has apologized.
"The Michael Richards incident really brought it to another level. It has forced people to express their outrage. Many people had been seething quietly," Comrie said.
Comrie also asked TV network Black Entertainment Television to stop using the word in its shows. Representatives of BET did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Grammy spokesman said he doubted the academy's 11,000 voting members would support any measure that might censor artists.
"They are not going to be supportive of something that excludes someone simply because they are using a word that is offensive," said Ron Roecker, vice president of communication for the Recording Academy.
The city resolution calling for the moratorium traces the etymology of the word from the Latin "niger," meaning black, to its first documented written use in 1786 as a term slave masters used to label their African slaves.
Use of the word by blacks exploded with the rise of rap music in recent years, and some black comedians like Chris Rock continue to use it in their routines.
"What, is there a fine? Am I going to get a ticket?" Rock mocked in a Reuters interview when asked about the City Council move. "Do judges say, '10 years, nigger!"'
Rock said politicians were trying to divert attention from real problems: "Enough real bad things happen in this city to worry about how I am going to use the word."

The city resolution calling for the moratorium traces the etymology of the word from the Latin "niger," meaning black, to its first documented written use in 1786 as a term slave masters used to label their African slaves.
Use of the word by blacks exploded with the rise of rap music in recent years, and some black comedians like Chris Rock continue to use it in their routines.
"What, is there a fine? Am I going to get a ticket?" Rock mocked in a Reuters interview when asked about the City Council move. "Do judges say, '10 years, nigger!"'
Rock said politicians were trying to divert attention from real problems: "Enough real bad things happen in this city to worry about how I am going to use the word."
